What is Adl?

Adl (justice) is the belief that Allah is just.

It means that He does not do injustice to anyone. He treats us not only with justice but with grace and mercy.

Allah has given us freedom of will and choice. When we choose by our own free will to do what Allah commands, we are promised reward and happiness in the next world. On the other hand, those who disobey Allah will be punished in the Hereafter.

Adl in the Holy Quran

One of many verses regarding the Adl of Allah in the Holy Quran is:

إِنَّ اللَّـهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ

“Indeed Allah enjoins justice and kindness (16:90).”

More on Adl

Sometimes we confuse Adl (Justice) with being equal. For example, if everyone in a classroom was given the same marks in their test, whether they did well or not, it would be equal but not fair (just) to everyone.

To believe in the Adl of Allah means to believe that:

  • Allah is fair to everyone
  • He never forces anyone to anything
  • He will always reward those who obey Him, and punish those who disobey him

FAQ:

Is it possible for Allah to be unjust?

Someone who is unjust, does injustice either because they are ignorant, or because they have a need to do injustice. None of these reasons can exist when considering Allah who is all-knowing and powerful. Therefore Allah is just.
