Our religion has 5 fundamental beliefs, known as the ‘Usool-e-Deen’ or the ‘Roots of Religion’.
The Usool-e-Deen are beliefs that each Muslim must understand and accept firmly with their heart (only confessing them verbally is not enough).
If these beliefs are strong, understanding the rest of the religion will also become easy. They are referred to as ‘Roots’ since roots are what keep a tree alive, and if the roots of a tree are weak, the tree will also be weak.
The 5 Usool-e-Deen (Roots of Religion) are:
Tawheed - The belief that there is only one God
Adl - The belief that Allah is just
Nubuwwah - The belief that Allah has sent prophets to guide us
Imamah - The belief that Allah has appointed leaders after prophets
Qiyamah - The belief in the day of Judgement
FAQ:
Is it permissible to follow others (do taqlid) in Usool-e-Din?
Most scholars believe that it is not permissible to follow others (do taqlid) in Usool-e-Din, rather the Usool-e-Din must be understood with certainty within one’s heart. However, it is ok to ask scholars to gain knowledge if one does not know the answer.
