To help understand the steps of our daily prayers, we will be showing how to pray a 2 unit prayer:

It is mustahab to recite the Adhan and Iqamah before the wajib prayers
It would be helpful to have an adult with you when trying to learn to pray for the very first time. Try to pray daily next to your parents to practice and learn the steps by heart.

1. Salat starts with Qiyam (the standing posture). To begin salat, make Niyyah (intention to pray to be near to Allah (swt)). The intention should be for the specific prayer in mind, and it should not change throughout the salat. This intention does not have to be said with words, the intention in mind is enough.

2. Bring your palms up near the sides of your head and say “Allah-u-Akbar“. This action is referred to as ‘Takbirat-ul-Ihram’.

After the ‘Niyyah’, starting with ‘Takbirat-ul-Ihram’ all words should be said in Arabic, pronounced as clear as possible and must not be said in the heart/mind.

3. Perform Qira’at (recitation of surah Al-Hamd and one other surah from the holy Quran).

Keep in mind that “Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim” must be recited at the beginning of each surah.

4. Say ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ and then perform ‘Ruku‘ (the bowing posture). Once in Ruku we recite the ‘dhikr’ (praise of Allah (swt)): Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah) 3 times or “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Azeemi wa bi hamdih”

Then return to Qiyam (the standing posture) and recite:“Sami’allahu liman hamidah”

5. Say ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ and then perform ‘Sujood’ (the prostrating posture). Once in Sujood recite the ‘dhikr’ (praise of Allah (swt)): Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah) 3 times or “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘A’la wa bi hamdih”

6. Sit up from the Sujood posture into ‘Quood’ (the sitting posture). Recite: “Astaghfirullah Rabbi wa Atoobo ilayih”

7. Say ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ and then perform the second ‘Sujood’ (the prostrating posture). Once in Sujood recite the ‘dhikr’ (praise of Allah (swt)): Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah) 3 times or “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘A’la wa bi hamdih”

8. Recite “Bi holillahi wa aquwatihi wa aqumu wa a’qud”, and get back up into Qiyam. From here starts the second unit of your prayer.

9. Just like the first unit, perform Qira’at (recitation of surah Al-Hamd and one other surah from the Holy Quran).

10. Raise your hands in front of your face with your palms facing you into the ‘Qunoot’ (the praying posture), and recite any du’a that you wish.

To complete the second unit of prayer, perform steps 4-7 (ruku, qiyam, sujood, quood, sujood), then return to quood (the sitting posture) and recite ‘tashahud’:

Ash hadu al laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lah,
wa ash hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa rasuluh
Allaahumma salli `alaa Muhammadin wa Aali Muhammad

Then to finish the prayer recite ‘salam’:

Assalaamu `alayka ayyuhan nabiyyu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh
Assalamu `alaynaa wa `alaa `ibaadillaahis saaliheen
Assalamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Once the last line of the ‘salam’ is recited the prayer comes to an end, and we recite  the ‘takbir’ 3 times:

Allah-u-Akbar, Allah-u-Akbar, Allah-u-Akbar
