What is Khums

Khums is one of the mandatory expenses that all Baligh Muslims need to fulfill if it applies to them. Essentially Khums needs to be paid on any money savings or unused items on its 1/5th value. Khums has two-part Sehm Imam and Sehm Sadaat (sehm means share). Imam part needs to be spent via the Marja representative. Sadaat part may be given to poor people ourselves (depending on Marja)

Why we give Khums

Khums money is like an Islamic Bank for the Muslim community. It is used to fund students who cannot afford religious education, build mosques and community centres and help poor people.

Khums applies to unused money and things like clothing, books, other personal things but not gifts. All Baligh Muslims need to set an annual date to review if Khums applies to them. If you never calculated Khums, you have to calculate now and pay all previous dues.

Khums in the Holy Quran

Know that whatever of a thing you acquire, a fifth of it is for Allah, for the Messenger, for the near relative, and the orphans, the needy, and the wayfarer…(8:41)
